Here is a piece I did for Grit TV. Documentary filmmaker Yoruba Richen traveled to Washington for the inauguration with her mother Aishah Rahman, a playwright and professor at Brown University. From the March on Washington to the inauguration of Barack Hussein Obama, in her work and politics, has followed the arc of American history. Richen talks to her mother about the significance of this inauguration and the Martin Luther King holiday, the March on Washington, and the power of protest politics. She says the feeling in America today is like that of South Africa after apartheid. People are breathing collectively and there is hope.

According to housing advocates, the firm's record bonus pool of $18 billion dollars could help 1.8 million homeowners get workouts for their subprime mortgages and prevent the subprime foreclosure wave from hitting the American and global economies in 2008. The homeowners choir greeted a Goldman Sachs investment bank holiday party outside BLVD, in New York City.

Cyclists rode in memory of Anthony Delgado for Brooklyn's Critical Mass ride on May 11, 2007. Anthony was struck by an SUV while riding his bike on April 29, 2007. Family and Friends met the ride for a memorial at the intersection of Palmetto Street and Central Avenue in Bushwick NY. The song the video is cut to, "I'll Be Missing You" was playing at the memorial. To find out more about Anthony, here is a memorial site created by his family.

Rosie Mendez rides in NY Critical Mass

March Critical Mass in NYC was the first ride since the new police regulations went into effect requiring a permit for any gathering of 50 or more cyclists.

The police didn't enforce the new rule per say but they did issue 50 traffic tickets and make up to five arrests.

Councilmember Rosie Mendez joined the ride in a pedicab in hopes she can educate herself and collegues to try to pass legislation that makes sense.

Civil Rights attorneys Norman Siegel and Steve Hyman also showed support at the rally in Union Square park before the ride.

Oaxaca Protesters Describe Jail Beatings, Abuse by Police

In mid-December I went to Oaxaca City with an international human rights delegation. While we were there the government released 42 protesters who were rounded up following a large demonstration at the end of November. Demonstrators have been calling for the ouster of Oaxaca Governor Ulises Ruiz and the withdrawal of federal police who were sent there several weeks ago to crush the popular uprising led by striking teachers and APPO - the Popular Assembly of the People of Oaxaca.

Many of newly released protestors have said they were beaten in jail and describe abuse at the hands of police. Scores of other protesters remain in jail including Flavio Sosa, a leader of APPO. Sosa was arrested in Mexico City the day before he was to resume negotiations with the governor to resolve the conflict. Meanwhile, the federal police have begun withdrawing from the center of Oaxaca.

Zapatistas Call For International Day of Protest in Solidarity With Oaxaca

It was the eve of the international day of solidarity with the people of Oaxaca and I was at the prison on the outskirts of Oaxaca City where a few people trickled out of the prison after having been detained since late November. One young man (who asked not to be filmed or identified) was a bus driver who got caught in a crackdown on November 20, 2006. With tears in his eyes, he described the conditions of his detention and noted that the saddest part was that he was falsely charged with robbing the bus and pulling a knife of a police officer. For a little update: Friends and relatives of prisoners in Oaxaca formed a human chain around the Tlacolula prison today.

In southern Mexico’s Oaxaca City supporters of the People’s Popular Assembly of Oaxaca again took to the streets to demand the resignation of Gov. Ulises Ruiz, the release of political prisoners and the withdrawal of federal police from the city. At the end of my trip to Mexico I headed out on at 13 hour bus ride from Mexico City to the state of Chiapas. On new years the Zapatistas held the First Encounter of the Zapatista Pueblos with the People of the World to share with the world their experiences with autonomous governments, education, health and communication.
